About Us

The Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI) is an independent, non-governmental, non-partisan and not-for-profit human rights organization established in December 1991. It seeks to remove impediments to democratic development and meaningful enjoyment of the fundamental freedoms enshrined in the 1995 Uganda Constitution and other internationally recognized human rights instruments. FHRI has successfully implemented a number of strategic plans since its inception. Each of these strategic plans has undertaken research, monitoring, documentation and advocacy on a variety of human rights issues; published human rights literature; has conducted workshops and seminars on basic law, human rights and related subjects; availed human rights information; have advocated for penal reform, legislative reform and judicial independence; and have undertaken campaigns for better administration of justice and respect for the rights of vulnerable groups of people such as the internally displaced people, children, minority, disabled and women through prison visits, training, dialogue and policy analysis. FHRI is a strong proponent of increased public awareness of the rights guaranteed in the 1995 Ugandan constitution and the international human rights instruments to which Uganda has acceded. The organization has produced and disseminated several in-depth, thought-provoking publications to educate the community and generate public debate on pertinent human rights issues.

FHRI addresses the entire range of human rights: civil and political as well as economic, social and cultural as defined in international human rights covenants. This is achieved through public education, capacity building efforts for the community leaders as well as strengthening collaboration with grass root structures, strategic partnerships, media campaigns, mass empowerment, research, monitoring, documentation and reporting; strategic litigation and legislative analysis, review and advocacy.

FHRI has spearheaded efforts to promote and protect internationally recognized human rights norms and standards in Uganda and has been able to successfully implement a number of relevant programmes. It also seeks partnerships while strengthening existing ones with institutions and groups pursuing a similar or related agenda at the local, national, regional and international level. FHRI currently is implementing its sixth three year strategic year plan titled: ‘Put Our World to Rights: Deepening Democratic Practices in Uganda’- (2009-2011).

The above human rights principles and themes are implemented at a national level and are executed in the following operating divisions;

  1. Research Division
  2. Legal Services Division
  3. Capacity Development Division
  4. Communication and Information Division
  5. Program Development Division and
  6. Partnerships
