The Long Road to Realising Labour Rights in Uganda Sept 2010-March 2011

This report presents the findings from a six-month research project carried out by the Foundation for Human Rights Initiative on labour rights in Uganda. Specifically, the study examined the current level of enjoyment of the right: to work; to join and form a trade union; to minimum standards of employment; to a safe and healthy working environment; and to protection upon leaving employment including social security and pension rights. Our report also looks at the current state of child labour in Uganda and goes on to provide a critical analysis of the current obstacles to the successful implementation of labour rights in Uganda. Juvenille Justice in Uganda, January - July 2009

 

Children are an especially vulnerable group. The protection guaranteed to children under international and national law is in addition to and not separate from the protection guaranteed to all individuals by law. The government of Uganda has domesticated the key international and regional standards into national laws, rules and procedures. Disability is not Inability July - Dec  2009

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2006) defines persons with disabilities(PWDs) to include those who have long-term physical,mental,intellectual or sensory impairments which in interaction with various barriers may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others. In addition, the Convention together with other international and national instruments; the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda and the Persons with Disability Act 2006, provide guarantees to PWDs to ensure that they have access and equal opportunities just like

other individuals in society. However, realization of these provisions is still lacking a major challenge. Download Report

Electoral Reforms in Uganda July - Dec 2008

Uganda’s road to achieving electoral democracy is still bumpy and far from meeting the internationally accepted standards. From 1980 when Uganda held its first general elections to the recently held 2006 general elections, all these elections have virtually been contested by Ugandans who have expressed dissatisfaction at the conduct of the elections and therefore contested the outcome.
