FHRI with support from the Finnish NGO Foundation for Human Rights (KIOS) continues to strengthen Community Based Organisations (CBO) capacity to promote respect for human rights in Uganda especially at the grass roots level. Five (5) Community Based Organisations including; Action for Human Rights and Civic Awareness (Kayunga district), Kalangala Human Rights Defenders (Kalangala district), Human Rights & Paralegal Services (Busia), Sembabule Paralegal Association (Sembabule district) and Bukoggolwa Women & Orphans’ Centre (Wakiso district have benefited from the institutional capacity development project and have in turn, stepped up their response mechanisms to human rights violations in their communities.
Between January and June 2010, the Capacity Development Division conducted three (3) institutional strengthening courses for Kalangala Human Rights Defenders (KHRD), 8th -12th March 2010, Human Rights and Paralegal Services (HUPAS) Busia, 13th – 15th April 2010 and Action For Human Rights and Civic Awareness (AHURICA), 18th – 20th May 2010.
Participants were introduced to key emergent issues including organisational development; strengthening and sustainability; the concept and practice of human rights; developing core techniques of human rights monitoring; documenting, reporting and advocacy skills; developing an organizational Strategic Action Plan; building strategic partnerships and effective fundraising strategies. Other areas covered are membership development, staffing and volunteerism; systems and policy development; good governance and democratic practices.
The courses were attended by members, staff and volunteers of these associations, 128 in total, Kayunga 45, (22 female and 23 male), Busia 42, (14 female and 28 male), and Kalangala 41, (20 female, 21 male).
