The Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI) in partnership with the Kenya Section of the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ-Kenya) is implementing the East Africa International Criminal Justice Initiative (EAICJI). The Initiative is generously funded by the European Union (EU). It aims at creating awareness and garnering support for the International Criminal Court (ICC) in Africa through training and dialogue with stakeholders including media, judiciary and the legislative.
As part of the initiative, FHRI and the ICJ-Kenya held a Media Sensitization workshop from October 14 to 15, 2009 at Speke Resort hotel Munyonyo. The workshop intended to train the media on the ICC’s possible use to curb impunity in Uganda and assess the media’s role in disseminating accurate information about the international criminal justice system.
The two day workshop drew 40 participants from different print and media houses in Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and Eritrea, representatives from the Mass Communication Department at the Uganda Christian University, Mukono and generated a forum for dialogue about the ICC with particular regard to the situation in Uganda.
As an outcome of the engagement between participants and human rights activists, members of the ICJ- Kenya, FHRI and representatives from media organizations, a network of media practitioners was created to further the awareness of the ICC in Uganda
