The Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI) participates in the 6th Assembly of the World Movement for Democracy, Jakarta, Indonesia, 11th -14th April 2010
 

Hundreds of democracy activists, practitioners and scholars from the world assembled in Jakarta, Indonesia from 11th -14th April 2010 for the 6th Assembly of the World Movement for Democracy. The Assembly, under the theme “Solidarity across Cultures: Working Together for Democracy,” drew more than 600 democracy activists, practitioners, and scholars world wide; to build upon the democracy-promotion strategies developed at previous assembly held in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Participants at the Jakarta Assembly represented political parties, trade unions, business associations, NGOs, research institutes, civic education organizations, anti-corruption groups, and democracy-support foundations, as well as parliamentarians and government officials with a special interest in democracy.

The Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI) was represented by the Executive Director Mr.Livingstone Sewanyana who was a Panelist on a topical workshop that discussed best practices for Engaging with Government and Parliament.

Participants at the congress benefited from a broad range of workshops at which best practices in building democracy were reviewed; innovative strategies explored to address obstacles they faced in their countries in promoting good governance. The workshops generated practical recommendations and proposals to enable participants strengthen networks that will expand democracy movements within diverse cultures.

Initiated in 1999 to “strengthen democracy where it is weak, to reform and invigorate democracy groups in countries that have not yet entered into a process of democratic transition”, the World Movement is a global network that meets periodically to exchange ideas and experiences and uses new information and communication technologies to foster collaboration among democratic forces around the World. It is led by a distinguished international Steering Committee and hosted by the Washington, DC based National Endowment for Democracy (NED) under the distinguished leadership of Mr. Carl Gershman, President of NED.
