On the 20th – 21st July 2009, the Penal Reform International together with the Foundation for Human Rights Initiative held a two day consultative meeting on a new African Prison Reform Strategy.
The roundtable held at the Speke Resort Munyonyo, Kampala took stock of progress in implementing penal reform in Africa and in particular local good practice that has developed in the treatment of prisoners as well as prioritize themes that will inform the future penal reform agenda for Africa.
The meeting was attended by 14 participants drawn from Malawi, Uganda, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Zambia, South Africa and the United Kingdom. Members shared on programmes of the penal reform and legal actions in their countries and discussed issues of torture reduction in and decongestion of prisons; campaigns against the death penalty; challenges for prisoners reintegrating into society and the civic role in the reduction of crime.
